Captain and Crew of Nutmeg, a 50ft St Francis Caribbean Yacht Charter

Crew Profile

Crew Profiles:
Max and Whitey (Maxine and John White) have a long history in the charter industry. Whitey is originally from Perth, Australia and Max from Utah but they have made ‘the Caribbean’ their home. After arriving on their cruising boat in 1992 to get married at Cane Garden Bay, they began their chartering career. They have hosted guests on large catamarans in the Virgin Islands, down the island chain and even a few years of ‘adventure chartering’ in the San Blas Islands of Panama and in Belize. The most recent years have been on a private yacht exploring the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Cuba and Belize. They are excited to now be returning to the beautiful British Virgin Islands where chartering began for them.
Captain Whitey takes the helm as he sails you around the islands. He knows all of the anchorages intimately and will customize the itinerary to the guest preferences. He is known as the entertainer and his primary goal is to make sure his guests on Nutmeg have the best vacation in their life. He holds a RYA Yacht Master Ocean license and has been a PADI Dive Instructor for 24 years. Whitey has a passion for teaching, whether it be snorkeling or scuba diving, or introducing people to anything regarding life on a boat. At night you can expect more entertainment with interesting ‘Whitey stories’ of his many travels while being served his original and classic beverages from the bar.

CHEF Maxine White
Originally from the land-locked state of Utah, Maxine had never been sailing until she met Whitey in San Francisco. She quickly took to it and before long she quit her job in the San Francisco Financial District to sail away under the Golden Gate Bridge with Whitey. Many sea miles later they were married at Cane Garden Bay, Tortola. Max has since completed over 45,000 blue water miles.
First Mate and Chef Max brings her years of extensive traveling to inspire her meal preparation on Nutmeg. Max likes to use local and fresh ingredients and her primary culinary specialties are Latin and Caribbean as well as Asian and Mediterranean cuisines. In past charter boat shows, she has won awards with her Tamarind Duck! Max is also an avid diver as a PADI Dive Master for over 20 years. She especially likes to show her guests the underwater world and knows the best of the snorkel spots in the BVIs.

You guys are definitely the greatest !!!
Please know that our experience with you on our charter vacation is one of the
finest experiences I’ve had in my lifetime [and I’ve had the opportunity
to do a lot] I thank God for our 6 days with you guys and for having
had the opportunity to meet each of you. I can’t tell you how many
people have inquired of us about our experience. Of course everyone is
envious. Margie tells everyone ” on a scale of 1 – 10, this trip was a
15″. D. Green

A HUGE thank you to our awesome crew of Paul and Ginette for making our vacation truly one of the best we have ever had. First, thank you for all your help and knowledge as to what boat and crew would be a great fit for our family. You were absolutely right on with everything!! As I had mentioned to you about the not so pleasant experience we had ten years ago when we chartered a sailboat with a captain in the BVIs, we were a tad nervous to give it another try. However, our experience was completely different this time. From the moment we rolled up to the dock, Paul and Ginette were there to greet us with open arms, take our luggage and escort us to the Nutmeg. After giving us the full tour of the beautiful catamaran and having yummy tropical beverages awaiting, they both did not stop for a second. We were treated to the most amazing, delicious meals (Ginettes meals and presentations were 5 star all the way), drinks and company that one could ask for! Paul and Ginette went out of their way to ensure that we all sit back, relax and leave everything to them. We really wanted to visit as many islands in the BVIs as we could, and Paul made that happen. And when our older kids wanted to go ashore in the evening for entertainment, Paul was so wonderful and patient shuttling them back and forth. I have to say that we all had a few tears when it was time to say good-bye to Paul and Ginette, and not only because they made our vacation extra special, but they both are the salt of the earth. We truly hope we get the chance to sail with them again!

Guests aboard NUTMEG in late March, 2013
Paul and Ginette,
We have spent most of our time since our return home on Friday reflecting upon the unbelievable week we spent cruising the BVIs aboard S/Y Nutmeg. The beautiful bays, the turquoise water, the white sandy beaches, the coral, the fish, and the sunsets were all so magnificent. But, to have enjoyed this extraordinary natural beauty aboard Nutmeg was both a treat and a privilege. She is a beautiful and high quality yacht, solidly built, supremely comfortable above and below decks, and perhaps most importantly very well maintained. At the end of the day, however, a boat is just fiberglass, wood, plexiglass, engines, electronics, and other systems. It is the Captain and the First Mate who transformed our charter into a dream vacation.
Paul, your professionalism and seamanship skills were evident from the moment we left the dock at Village Cay to the moment we returned a week later. It was a pleasure to watch the calm and steady way that you moved around the boat, handled lines, and controlled most aspects of Nutmegs operation. Your local knowledge enabled us to enjoy a perfect itinerary which included just about each destination we had hoped to visit, yet we never felt rushed or concerned about where we would spend the night. It was also an absolute pleasure to discuss many aspects of boats and sailing with you while under way.
Ginette, you were the perfect First Mate. Your genuine warmth encompassed the entire family from the moment we stepped aboard. Your culinary skills are truly second-to-none. The whole family LOVED each and every meal. While we had provided you with some direction prior to the charter, we could not believe how you tailored each dish to everyones particular tastes. Your attention to detail and your special touches were also extraordinary. I smile every time I think of Nicoles little stuffed dog (Bluebell) sitting atop the pillow in her cabin after you made her bed.
In short, the two of you make an outstanding team. You anticipate each others moves and I was amazed at how you communicated without even needing to speak some of the time! You also have an unusual talent in that you quickly figured out what makes each member of our family tick and you catered perfectly to everyones wishes. In addition to providing us with an extraordinary charter experience, it was also a pleasure to get to know both of you. Rhonda and I really enjoyed our conversations with you about parenting, grand parenting, and everything in between.
This was a vacation that we will never forget for the rest of our lives. Thank you so much for everything that you did for helping create such wonderful memories.
With our warmest regards,
Richard and Rhonda
May 2011
We hope your charter lived up to your expectations. We would love to know some of your impressions about your yachting vacation. Please answer the following questions and add any comments you may have.

1. Was the crew friendly and accommodating?
Paul and Ginette were both delightful. They went out of their way to meet our needs and make us feel at home. In hindsight, they had a real talent for being a special part of the trip without being central to the trip. If you have reservations about how two “strangers” in such a small area will impact your trip, you need not worry with these two.

2. Was the yacht comfortable and clean?
Extraordinarily clean – not what I think of when I think of a boat. Was also concerned about tight quarters for 4 couples, plus crew. Not a concern – I’m 6’3″ and had all the room in the world.

3. Was the yacht well ventilated?
For the most part – without AC in May, it was a little warm. With the AC on, it was much better but we lost AC on one half of the boat for two nights. An isolated incident so hardly anything to consider.

4. Was the food good and well presented?
Wonderful and a great variety. Each meal was looked forward to buy our entire party and nver were we disappointed. Ginette was wonderful and the dinner ambience was perfect.

5. Did you like the area you sailed?
Absolutely – and I feel like if we didn’t, we could have directed Paul elsewhere and he would have accomodated and rationally explained why another plan might be better. He was well prepared and we didn’t have to think too much about where we were going – and were never disappointed when we got there.

6. Could we at Virgin Island Sailing, Ltd. have helped you further in any way?
Great process eliminated most questions – where there were some, VI Sailing (Ellen and Mallorie) was very prompt with their response.

Charter Dates: February 4 – 11, 2012
Area Cruised: Virgin Islands

We hope your charter lived up to your expectations. We would love to know some of your impressions about your yachting vacation. Please answer the following questions and add any comments you may have.

1. Was the crew friendly and accommodating?
Ginette and Paul were absoluetly fabulous! They were an essential part of our vacation. They made us feel so welcome; they catered to us, yet kept the atmosphere very casual and fun. Anything we asked for was taken care of.

2. Was the yacht comfortable and clean?
Nutmeg was a great vessel for our experience. Beautiful, inviting and relaxing, it was the perfect boat for our group. The cabins had plenty of storage and were very private. Interior was beautiful and well maintained. Our party of 8 had plenty of room inside and out, we never felt cramped or crowded.

3. Was the yacht well ventilated?
Yes, we did not even need a/c, the ocean breezes flowed thru and kept us cool and comfortable.

4. Was the food good and well presented?
I cannot say enough about the meals Ginette prepared. Before the trip, I said we will have ‘a captain and a cook’. Now I say we had ‘a captain and a CHEF’! She prepared wonderful breakfasts and lunches. Then every evening at about 5 pm she made a wonderful appetizer. Then dinner was 3 courses, including wonderful, handmade deserts! Her meals were beautifully presented, delectable, but not overly heavy and calorie laden. Delicious and FRESH! I was expecting a beautiful boat with awesome scenery, but I the cuisine was way better than I ever could have imagined.

5. Did you like the area you sailed?
We LOVED the BVI! We all hope to return. Captain Paul knows all the best places to go: the very private, quiet, intimate beaches, and the popular tourist spots, both not to be missed.

6. Could we have helped you further in any way?
not that I can think of.

7. May we post this review on our website?
Yes

8. Additional comments on your charter?
Our group also really enjoyed the ‘adult beverages’ Paul and Ginette served. From a wide selection of wines served with meals (or whenever!) to freshly prepared bushwackers and painkillers or the cocktail of your choice. I think our group may have broken the record for beer consumed, as well! We began planning our trip almost 2 years ago, and were hoping it would be a trip we would remember an cherish forever. Ginette and Paul fulfilled our dreams. Our trip could not have been better!
