Captain and Crew of Paradise, a 62ft Irwin Caribbean Yacht Charter

Crew Profile

Ruth & Bernd Bohmfalk: Bernd lived in Munich, Germany, where he also went to University and got his MBA (Master of Business Administration). In the ten years that he lived in Munich he was also a member of the voluntary fire fighters and engaged in the local rescue service.
Sailing means everything to Bernd and his enthusiasm for it is palpable. He was only seven years old when he obtained his first dinghy. He got his first license for sailing on inland seas at the age of fourteen and proved such a natural talent that he commenced giving sailing lessons thereafter. Together with his brother he progressed to going on long sailing tours on a Dutch Bojertjalk, which led him to Denmark, Sweden, Norway, England, Holland, and the Mediterranean. It was during this time that Bernd gained his considerable knowledge of seamanship.

In 1974 Bernd gained his Captains License for seagoing vessels under motor and sail on the waterways and continued his passion for sailing on his own ship within Europe. Together with his wife Ruth, he greatly expanded his seamanship by sailing a considerable number of sailing yachts belonging to various owners in the Caribbean. In 1993 the couple took their yacht to the USA and continued to explore the American East coast and the Bahamas under sail.
In 1996 Bernd and Ruth immigrated to British Columbia, Canada, where they opened up a Guest- and Cattle Ranch, which over the years was much frequented by guests from both America and Europe.
But after years of being high and dry on his Ranch, Bernd’s yearning for the ocean and for sailing became unbearable and he felt compelled to follow his calling and returned to sea.
One reason for Bernd’s love of the sea may lie in the fact that Bernd’s past is steeped in the history of sailing. His great grandfather and brothers were owners and captains of trimast ships. They sailed over the Atlantic and settled in Houston, Texas, where Bernd’s family lives to this day.
Today Bernd is once again sailing in the Caribbean on his own sailing yacht – a 62’Irwin – aboard which it is a great joy for him to share his love of the beauty of the Caribbean Islands with his guests.

Ruth grew up on the Baltic Coast of Germany and from early on totally took to the water element. So it was only natural for her to learn to sail whilst still a young girl. She loved it! After finishing her schooling she worked within the Public Health Authorities and later on completed her studies in education and nutrition at University. She then taught nutrition and cooking to youth students at school.
Ruth gained her Captains License for seagoing vessels under motor and sail on the waterways and joined Bernd in sailing to Denmark, Sweden, Norway and later to America, the Bahamas and the Caribbean.
Guests visiting the Guest- and Cattle Ranch that she and Bernd ran in Canada got a taste of her superb cooking. Ruth even prepared her delectable food using organic vegetables and fruits harvested from her own garden. She loves the challenge of being chef and treating guests to delicious meals onboard their sailing yacht „Paradise“.

It is easy to relax and enjoy the company of Bernd and Ruth. They take great pleasure in making the best out of what life has to offer them. They have the wonderful ability of making guests feel at home and enjoy sharing life aboard their sailing yacht. Guests also have the opportunity of receiving informal teaching of sailing skills if they want.

Welcome aboard the PARADISE.

Dear Bernie & Ruthie,
What a wonderful trip! You are great hosts, taking us to great coves and harbors, showing us superb snorkeling sites, preparing delicious meals, and making sure we are having the best time. The cuisine was everything we hoped!
We will be extolling the great S/Y Paradise to all our friends and we hope to join you soon again!
Bernie and Ruthie!
John has said it all so beautifully!
You have provided us an exquisite adventure in your beautiful boat. We have delighted in the superbly presented and composed meal-fare, which was absolutely perfect. It has been a pleasure to be with you, and share our lives together.
Thank you for your careful guided snorkeling lessons; they have enriched our lives and I like to describe it to other interested travelers:
“One of the great pleasures of our trip was guided snorkeling by Bernie and Ruthie! Like any extraordinary teacher, each took us from where we were with our skills as swimmers, snorkelers and comfort and confidence in the water, and then guided us forward. They love the ocean, the waters and its gardens and the magnificent fishes. Ruthie and Bernie get into the water and carefully point out where particular species are swimming. As teachers, they develop a kind and patient relationship with the snorkeler. They watch us carefully, give specific feedback to improve technique, encourage you beyond any fears, and carefully fit your equipment. What a joy through their careful attention to more successfully engage with the water and view nature’s richness!”
With gratitude, great love and peace,
Candace & John Holley

Words cannot express our appreciation to Bernd and Ruthie for such a memorable birthday vacation for Ruth (yes, two Ruthies on one yacht ?). Arlyn planned a surprise trip aboard SY Paradise to celebrate Ruth’s birthday, then along with Bernd and Ruthie provided the trip of Ruth’s dreams!

These are just a few of our “favorite things” from our time spent aboard SY Paradise with Bernd and Ruthie:

• SY Paradise – a lovely, well-maintained, comfortable and clean yacht with room for privacy or for gatherings
• Efficiency – from sailing to meals all were conducted efficiently and seamlessly, allowing us to immerse ourselves in the enjoyment
• Food and beverage – the combination of textures, colors and tastes, along with the joy and precision of service plus the attention to detail made every meal a fabulous experience – we are still adjusting to our own cooking! To make Ruth’s birthday an even more special occasion, cake and champagne were served with breakfast!
• Comfort – from the minute we boarded, Bernd and Ruthie made us feel at ease and safe; we had no worries … about anything
• Enthusiasm – Bernd and Ruthie’s love of sailing and life were apparent in their conversations, teamwork, and willingness to share their knowledge. We had many conversations about sailing, philosophy, and the operation and mechanics of a yacht; yet, if we wanted time alone, we had that too. Both Bernd and Ruthie are very observant and pick up on what works best for you.
• Fun Activities – plenty of opportunity (and instruction if needed) for sailing, snorkeling, swimming, walking along beaches, kayaking, reading, talking, listening to music (an incredible collection) or just relaxing and enjoying the fabulous scenery (sunsets, fish, birds, stars, water, sky, …)

“Sailing the British Virgin Islands” is listed in Patricia Schultz’s book 1,000 Places To See Before You Die: A Traveler’s Life List. We would amend her recommendation to “Sailing the British Virgin Islands aboard SY Paradise with Bernd and Ruthie”. We arrived with limited familiarity of the sea and sailing, and then left with tears in our eyes and hopes of a future adventure with Bernd and Ruthie.

Best regards,

Arlyn and Ruth

Dear Ruthie and Bernie!

We miss you and Paradise!

We wanted to thank you for all that you did to make the trip as fabulous and memorable as it is.

We want to start by saying:” Thank You for everything!” Our trip was “Fabulous” because of you and Paradise! We have some great memories and made 2 new friends!!

Paradise – a magnificent sailing vessel and perfectly maintained with all of the comforts of home. We truly enjoyed the experience vs. bareboat.

Safety – could not ask for more. The competency of Captain Bernie and Chef and First Mate Ruthie are superior and should not be questioned. They always made sure we were safe; sailing, swimming, shore excursions, communication, equipment, everything. They took time to explain and always great communication so we executed their directions and everyone made it in/out – on/off of dingy and boat and shore.

100% satisfaction; food (we miss Ruthie’s cooking), service, cleanliness, maintenance, equipment, music, competency, sailing, compatibility, personality, comfort, safety, security, island choices, etc., etc., etc.
101% satisfaction; beverages (LOL!)

The only complaint we have it that we only booked 7 days!

The BVI’s is always great but this time we were able to sit back and relax and enjoy because we were in the hands of others. It was different and we loved it. Perfection!

Thank you for; sun, fun, food, service, smiles, stories, laughs, sailing, experience, new friendship and fond memories, etc……

We see you again!

Safe Sailing!

Best regards,
Deb, Dan, Barbara and Richie

Dear Bernie and Ruthie

As an experienced sailor with over 80,000 blue water miles experience and owner of 7 boats, I can say that my charter on SV Paradise is among the best sailing voyages I have ever had.

First indication of this charters level of excellence was an introduction to the ships Master (Bernie) on the dock of Village Cay Marina. Bags (8) were seamlessly transported to SV Paradise. This was effortless for me and 3 friends. Then we were introduced to the charter vessel which stands out about all in the BVI harbor.

The Ted Irwin designed boat of 60’ LOA is immaculate in appearance and operationally sound. The bright work is mirror like and accommodations provide a level of comfort that was unmatched in my 30 years of boating. The attention to detail includes orthopedic pillows, plush berths, and spacious living areas above and below. The ventilation was great with air conditioning as needed. Safety was a top priority only equaled by gourmet cooking at each of the 3 meals per day prepared by Ruthie. Food was varied and delicious and presentation was artistic and meticulous. Ruthie, wife First Mate and Chef is also a licensed Captain who is at the helm for all anchoring or moorings. The boat is extremely comfortable at anchor with little motion noticed. Underway the boat is fast and Bernie’s knowledge of the islands is encyclopedic. Our destinations were made in a timely fashion without concern.

Finally, Bernie and Ruthie instilled confidence in all charters; those with little experience; those with anxiety about boarding, traveling and disembarking on the inflatable.

This charter was my first with Captain and First Mate/Chef and I can say I learned a great deal about maintenance and seamanship in an atmosphere of complete enjoyment and comfort.

I recommend SV Paradise, Captain and First Mate/Chef without reservation.

I wanted to follow up with you as we adjust to life back in reality following an absolutely awesome week aboard the yacht Paradise. I know I speak for Leah, Hutch, and Andrea when I say that the only disappointing part of the whole trip was having it end!

We all got a glimpse of what was to come with the extremely appreciated accommodation for our reschedule due to family circumstances. Once we arrived in St. Thomas and met Ruthie at Molly Molone’s, our expectations were only exceeded at every turn for the next six days. Bernie and Ruthie were the most delightful hosts one could ever imagine – their love for life and dedication to insuring our relaxation was unrivaled. Bernie’s engaging stories were entertaining and inspiring, and the magic Ruthie performed with an electric cooktop and a toaster oven was nothing short of miraculous. From the orange-infused pancakes and egg frittata for breakfast to the salad with fresh chicken and amazing wraps for lunch to the filet mignon, salmon, and tuna steak for dinner, everything was nothing short of incredible – all with a lightness that left us ready for our next adventure.

Bernie was a master at finding convenient yet secluded coves to enjoy the evening’s activities, and his knowledge of the BVI’s afforded us the opportunity to find the best snorkeling and points of interest available. When it was time to party, they were the ultimate organizers. From music, ours or theirs, to Ruthie’s Painkillers, they were always at the ready. In fact, they were the first ones into the water one night – leading the charge over the side into the beautiful blue Caribbean. Think we even had a mermaid sighting that night. However, when it came time for us to enjoy our privacy, they were as inconspicuous as one could be.

I’m certain that the Caribbean has a number of excellent charters available with great crews, but for our money, none could top the experience we enjoyed with Bernie and Ruthie on the Paradise. As they said all week, their goal is to have charterers at the start of the week and friends at the end, and we are all proud to call them our newest friends. We can’t wait to find our next opportunity to sail away with Bernie “Dr. Feelgood” and Ruthie.

Thanks again,
Doug and Leah

Would highly recommend Bernie and Ruth and their boat.
January 2012
Ken and I recently returned from our BVI charter aboard Paradise with Bernie and Ruthie, and I wanted to provide this testimonial as soon as possible because our experience was nothing short of spectacular.
I am aware that I’m writing this as much for prospective charterers as I am for captain and crew (it’s great to be able to rely upon these testimonials when making vacation decisions). And for that reason, I first want to say that if you’re searching for a monohull sailing yacht in the 60-ft range that can comfortably accommodate up to 4 guests, your search should stop right here, right now, with Paradise.
My husband and I have been sailing for 20 years, and have chartered numerous times between US coastal waters and the BVI. During that time we’ve experienced everything from the ridiculous to the sublime. We know that the most beautiful yacht cannot compensate for a sub-standard crew, nor can a seasoned and dynamic crew make up for a disappointing vessel. With Bernie and Ruthie aboard Paradise, you get the very best of both: a boat that’s supremely comfortable, laid-out perfectly, spotless from bow to stern and beautifully appointed; and a crew that’s rich in knowledge and experience, highly-qualified, attentive to your every need and desire, smart, savvy and really fun sailing companions.
We were blessed with magnificent wind for our entire charter, and took the best advantage of it, setting our itinerary day by day with lots of flexibility depending on our mood, the wind and the currents. From our departure point at Scrub Island to Virgin Gorda, Anegada, Monkey Point, Jost Van Dyke, Peter Island, Cooper Island and points in between, Bernie and Ruthie proved a robust sailing team, expertly navigating the lively waters of the Caribbean and Atlantic, and deftly negotiating densely populated anchorages for protected overnighting. They were more than happy to turn over the helm, too, at our request, and allow us the fun of sailing a boat that is more than twice the size of our own.
Our evenings were always beautifully serene – a welcome contrast to the lively days at sea. Beginning with cocktails (and might I mention that we never found the bartender or the bar selection lacking) through dinner at sunset in the spacious cockpit (replete with mood lighting!) we were treated to a wonderful variety of succulent meals, all equally delicious, and all prepared from fresh, organic ingredients from scratch and to order by Ruthie. Surprisingly, on the last night of our charter, Bernie took over the culinary responsibility and delivered a knockout Sambuca Shrimp entrée as well.
Finally, a good crew can be distinguished from a great crew by measuring its response to challenges and crises. We had one such opportunity during our charter. During our final night aboard (at about 5 a.m.) we awoke to obvious commotion on deck. We raced topside to discover that a 110-ft. power cruiser which had been anchored well ahead of our port bow at Marina Cay was dragging anchor and was in danger of hitting no fewer than five much smaller boats (Paradise among them and likely first to be hit) as it drifted quickly backward in the howling wind (probably blowing 25-30 knots overnight). Our boats, of course, were swinging on their anchors in the wind, considerably increasing the chance of collision. The crew jumped into action. Ruthie tied bumpers to our port stern and Bernie tried to hail the boat’s captain on the radio while shining the boat repeatedly with a high intensity spotlight, while my husband repeatedly blew an air horn, all in an attempt to rouse the obviously sleeping crew and passengers. I began snapping pictures to document in case liability became an issue.
By this time, all passengers aboard the smaller boats in imminent danger were topside (some in life jackets) yelling to awaken passengers and crew on the drifting boat. After it became clear that our initial attempts had failed (and with no time to waste), Bernie boarded the dinghy with spotlight in hand and circled the drifting vessel. Within a few minutes, we saw the first of the large boat’s crew alight. He mustered the captain and crew of their vessel; their engine started and they began lifting anchor. By this time, the rogue vessel was within 20-25 feet of our stern. They pulled away safely, however, and no boats were damaged.
After dawn broke some time later, we were visited by a delegation of passengers from various other boats at anchor who wanted to thank Paradise for saving them from what could have been an unmitigated mess.
Later that morning we enjoyed a spectacular German pancake breakfast before having to return to the airport for our flight home. We made up for a little lost sleep on the plane, dreaming of warm breezes, perfectly trimmed sails, and our next charter aboard our favorite boat (Paradise) with our favorite crew.
Many, many thanks to our new friends, Bernie & Ruthie, for a week of pure joy.

Hi Lynne,

Sorry to respond so late. I did want to write in regards to our charter experience on Paradise. I’ll start with the boat. It was extremely clean and well maintained. It is obvious Bernie and Ruthie work very hard to keep everything looking so nice. It was not just nice to look at, but it was comfortable as well. Bernie and Ruthie are extraordinary people and while I am sure the trip would have been fun no matter what, they certainly enhanced it and I can’t imagine chartering with anyone else. They went above and beyond their duties to make sure we were safe and enjoying ourselves at all times. They are both very pleasant people and I think I speak for everyone in my family when I tell you that we very much enjoyed their company! Bernie and Ruthie are just amazing people and they complement each other very well. I felt safe and confident with Bernie as captain and Ruthie is very competent as well.
The food was absolutely amazing!!!!! Ruthie’s cooking was incredible and I loved every single meal. She amazed all of us with what she could do with such a small kitchen. It was obvious she worked hard on preparing tasty healthy meals and I am very grateful she did. Usually on a vacation, I eat overpriced mediocre food. Ruthie’s was a pleasant surprise!
I can write all day about how wonderful the trip was and praise Bernie and Ruthie but I won’t use up all your valuable time. Bottom line is we had a wonderful time! Bernie and Ruthie are truly amazing people and they made a profound impact on me. I have so much respect and admiration for them both. It is rare to meet two very special people like them and I am so glad that” Dad” found them. I feel like it was meant to be! I do not know how to get in touch with them, so please forward this email to them if you do not mind. Thank you for everything and have a great weekend.

This was a second charter that you arranged for me with Paradise. The boat along with Bernie and Ruth are simply put way above others in their profession. Their pride, knowledge of sailing is beyond comparison. They are the ultimate in their profession. They are wonderful hosts and a joy to be with.
It was my sons’ first sailing trip and I was a little apprehensive. They all told me it was the best trip of their lives.
It will not be my last trip with Bernie and Ruth. Their enthusiasm, skill and true kindness and concern for your safety and comfort is so reassuring that I could never settle for any other charter experience.
Thank you for your patience and skill putting this charter together with a second charter on Paradise. Bernie and Ruth have an extraordinary talent of making you feel so comfortable.

Loved the food.

5. Did you like the area you sailed?

8. Additional comments on your charter?
For the week of May 22, 2011, we had very cloudy days and no winds – extremely unusual for the Virgin Islands – and I thought the week was going to be a bust, but it turned out to be as enjoyable as any other vacation, thanks to the hospitality of Ruth and Bernd. From the moment we boarded, I had a good feeling about the trip because of their personality. Ruth proved the perfect hostess and added a balanced congruity to Bernd’s humor and joviality. No matter how demanding our requests, they never failed to provide what we wanted. The boat was as immaculately kept as anyone could require, and the food was delicious and, yet, simple and healthy. I couldn’t think of anyone else I would recommend for someone looking for a really laid-back, “get away from it all” kind of vacation.

“We are currently in San Juan waiting for our again delayed flight back to Miami and then on to Cincinnati. But it does not matter how long the delay ends up. The time we had with Bernd on the Paradise was worth every moment.

It is always slightly worrying when you have looked for forward to something for so long which-in the end it turns out to be an anti-climax. The opposite was the case the Bernd and Paradise. The charter exceeded every expectation that we had. We had not expected five star service and five star dining on board such a well appointed and beautiful yacht. Everything about this trip was perfect. The information that you provided, the advice you gave us to steer us towards Paradise and then in the end Paradise itself.

Bernd was a charming and delightful host who new exactly how to balance friendliness with privacy. He knew all the special places to go where we could swim, snorkel and relax alone. The experience was one of pampered luxury with Bernd taking care of our every need with charm and humor. His cooking was a revelation. I travel a great deal and am a little jaded when it comes to eating in hotels and restaurants. Bernd is a chef of extraordinary quality and originality. Every night was a culinary delight set in the romantic candle lit ambiance of Paradise’s top deck.

The course he chose and the places he found were the best of the Caribbean. Moving with Paradise under full sail driven by the warm Caribbean Trade Winds was a delight. Every moment Bernd was on top of his game. His love of sailing such a special yacht enhanced our own enjoyment of experience.

We would both strongly recommend Bernd’s Captain only charter to anyone wishing the time of a lifetime. For us it was the best and most romantic vacation we have ever had together.

Thank you for such a great recommendation. We will be back!”

The Silcoxes
Our charter vacation was perfect in so many ways. I think back on it now with fond memories of all the moments which made it magical, both intended and unexpected.

Looking up at the stars on a strikingly beautiful night in the Virgins Islands, the unlikely sighting of a killer whale swimming beside us in Roadtown Harbor, day after day of glorious sunrises and stunning sunsets, none of these can be guaranteed by a charter boat crew, but we only saw them because of our charter.

On the other hand, gourmet meals, boat drinks and cocktails, superb coffee arriving with the sunrise and some of the most exhilarating sailing you are ever likely to experience, are exactly what Bernie and Ruth, our hosts aboard â•?Paradiseâ•?, did give us. While no crew can presume to provide all the components of a perfect vacation, they can certainly put you within reach of them, and Bernie and Ruth did everything in their power to give us a memorable week.

No one could have predicted the unusual sighting of a killer whale in the relatively shallow waters off Roadtown, and it would have been easy to overlook it as it swam just below the surface. Captain Bernie spotted him first and called out to us just as the trademark black and white hide broke the surface and quickly submerged again, showing us a snowy, white fluke. That was sighting number one. When the captain quickly brought the boat about and followed the wake of the submerged giant, we saw him surface three more times. Opportunity, meet skill.

Each evening, with the dayâ•?s experiences lingering in our thoughts and on our tongues, while we sipped our cocktails, we would have been content with a simple meal to satisfy our growling bellies. Instead, each night, we were treated to a candlelit, gourmet delight, complete with wine and dessert. .Duck, tuna, chicken, salmon, pasta, every meal meeting or exceeding the previous one and also beautifully presented, we took pictures. Rather than living off the days events,, we were indulged in another. Skill, meet opportunity.

While you would expect every charter crew to be aware of the points of interest in their cruising area, our crew poured over charts every morning to assure that time and conditions allowed us to get to the most and the best places, while still enjoying a great sail in getting us there. This captain loves to sail and only turned on the engine when absolutely necessary, to our delight. Knowledge, meet planning.

And if, by chance, one of your party shows up with a broken wrist, still in a splint, prepare to be treated to a level of caution, planning, and accomplishment that keeps you comfortable, safe and engaged beyond all expectations. Skill, knowledge and opportunity, meet care and concern.

No, Ruth and Bernie could not guarantee blue skies, starlit nights, a full moon or an Orca to greet us. All they could do was everything else to give us a vacation both memorable and comfortable, and that, it turns out, was more than enough. Thank you Bernie and Ruth for a marvelous vacation and thank you, Ellen, for recommending â•?Paradiseâ•?. We will never forget it.

SY Paradise BVI – The Best Choice

Dear Kathy (Broker), Bernie and my sweet Ruthie,

Thank you for the fantastic trip. Bernie (Capt) and Ruthie (Admiral) started out as just that but by the time we left they had become our friends. This was our fifth boat trip to the BVI and by far it was the best. The boat was immaculate and Bernie is a sailor supreme that I would sail anywhere with. Both of them know the islands like the back of there hand. We would highly recommend the Paradise to any of your clients. Every meal was wonderful and delicious. The presentation was artistic and the conversation was interesting and funny. They are the consummate couple that never stopped doing there best to make sure that we were comfortable in every way. Sleeping accommodations were very comfortable, clean and private. They have given us wonderful memories that we will cherish for the rest of our lives.

Best Regards, John and Sally Bergman

Dear Bernie and Ruthie,

I want to thank you for the wonderful time I spent on your Paradise. Your boat is beautiful, roomy and comfortable. You were accommodating in every way, and helped my family have a vacation that will be etched in our memories for a lifetime.
I had mentioned before the trip that one of my premier concerns on any vacation is being able to sleep. You took care of that worry by providing us our choice of cabins, all of which were outfitted well with comfortable beds and by having the nice cool air conditioning on at night; I had some of the best sleep I have ever had away from home.
My next concern was that of feeding the kids, who can be quite picky. Ruthie navigated around that potential trouble spot with her expert planning and cooking. At each meal the children had more than enough delicious choices of their liking, as well as something new to try. Ruthie, you were indeed wonderful in your tending to their needs in this area.
The time aboard your ship was everything I had hoped for. It was so nice to wake up in the quiet of the morning and listen to the sounds of the surrounding area waking up, with the goats bleating and the gulls and pelicans diving for their breakfasts. Soon, Ruthie would bring the morning coffee, and, when all were awake, she prepared a mouthwatering, yet healthy breakfast, and we were ready to sail off to the adventures of the day.
Though watching Bernie and Ruthie co-captain the boat was entertaining, Bernie picked out great places for us to enjoy the beauty of the islands. The beaches, snorkeling, and swimming were all that I had hoped for, and both Bernie and Ruthie were very obliging to any and all requests by our family, plus they had fun suggestions of their own. Bernie was willing to take out the kayaks whenever the kids asked, or just let us relax if that was our desire. They even watched over the kids while my wife and I went ashore one evening to listen to some music.
Not enough can be said about Ruthie’s wonderful cooking, or about the hospitality given by each of you. For me, the relaxation aspect of the trip cannot be overstated. Not having to worry about gathering the family for meals, or taking taxis to points of interest, or trying to keep everyone entertained, or wondering if we have everything we need. It was all done for me. It was total relaxation. I greatly appreciate your help in providing my family with such a wonderful vacation.

We can heartily recommend your Paradise to anyone, and welcome you to print or publish our recommendation as you wish.

Dear Gail, (Broker)

My wife and have just returned from a wonderful week as guests of Bernie and Ruthie aboard Paradise. We really needed a break from our hectic lives in Dallas and were looking forward to some serious “down time” and some significant alone time. Thanks for the recommendation. It was a perfect fit.

I have chartered in the Caribbean before and this was the best so far. The trepidation of spending a week aboard a sailboat with an unknown couple was dispelled in the first minutes upon boarding. We quickly felt at ease with this lovely couple. Bernie and Ruth are elegant, classy, respectful, humorous and efficient. They provided for our every need, most without us even asking. They seamlessly toe the line of perfect and attentive service–provide without hovering. They epitomize the phrase “treat guests as you would like to be treated.” No expense was spared in providing for our comfort and appetites. The cuisine was as fine as any expensive Dallas restaurant and much superior to anything we tried in the BVI. They appear to be in the business for the fun and adventure of it and not for the bottom line dollars. Also, it is obvious that both Bernie and Ruth love to sail and we did so at every opportunity even though it would have been easier to just motor from beach to beach. They even insisted on sailing to Anegada and it turned out to be the highlight of the trip. My experience has been that captains would use any excuse to avoid that round trip.

My wife and I found our much needed alone time often on isolated beaches recommended by our hosts and often right on the boat deck. However, we found ourselves seeking out the company of Bernie and Ruth for interesting and compelling conversations. The more we got to know them, the more we wanted to know. It is the hope of both couples that our friendship continues far beyond the Virgin Islands to wherever life may take us. It was a life changing trip for us-just what we needed to help recharge and refocus our lives.

Dearest Ruth and Bernd,

so we are back in good old Germany now, fun is over, but our memories will last a lifetime …
You asked us to write a testimonial about our impressions, so here it comes (please do not notice the incorrect use of words, grammar…):

How can we find the right words about our time with you, Ruth and Bernd ? My wife and me are enthusiastic, but not well-experienced landlubber-sailors, and we like to be away from all crowds. We made a very long charter – 18 days – and we don’t want to miss a single one ! We were sailing everywhere in the BVI und US Virgins, visiting all the islands, bays and great places, we could think of. Our daily itinerary was suggested by Bernd and Ruth, and we were never disappointed in their choices. And – we were sailing with strong winds all the time, what a fun ! Bernd and Ruthie are very experienced captains and sailors, who always gives you the warm feeling of perfect safety. So, if you want to do just gentle sailing, they are the right ones, but if you want to have a little more competitive sailing, Bernd’s eyes will show a special glow …

But much more than perfect sailing was Bernd’s and Ruth’s friendliness, heartiness and helpfulness. They are simply the best, every wish you could ever think of, is fulfilled in a second, and always with a perfect smile. Bernd and Ruth are very sensitive hosts, and our time onboard was the perfect balance of privacy and sharing our time with them. These wonderful evenings with lot’s of good stories, philosophy, laughter and fun brought us together, so, after a while, it was much more a company of friends sailing together than a charter. (To make your day, ask Bernd for the imitation of the young calf’s cry …)

As often written in the testimonials, the dining experience is extraordinary and exceeded our expectations in every way – they only buy the best organic food and you will taste the difference – it’s simply gourmet cuisine !

Of course, the boat is clean, well-maintained and very roomy, if you want to, they provide music, films, games … For us it was just fine to sit under the stars, enjoy a good conversation and let the world go round….

We are experienced travellers and we have seen many beautiful spots and places all over the world. We know about the standards of 5star-hotellery, but these 18 days were different, they were unforgettable. Paradise is not just the ship’s name …

Thank you, Ruth and Bernd, for your extraordinary hospitality, thank you for sharing your stories, your time and your emotions with us. We will meet again, anytime, anywhere, hopefully onboard Paradise !

Dear Captains Bernie and Ruthie,

It was a pleasure to meet you and to see how professional sailors operate. This was a vacation like no other we have had. The ten days spent on Paradise were relaxing, entertaining and educational.

You gave me(Linda) the confidence to tackle my fear of the water. Snorkeling was fun and living on the boat gave us a different perspective of the islands. In addition, the meals were delicious and expertly prepared. We wondered how each one could be better than the last.

We appreciated your concern for the welfare of our friend, John, who had some health problems. But, you adjusted and made this a dream come true for him as well as all of us. We will be forever grateful for our experiences on Paradise.

We would encourage anyone looking for adventure or a unique vacation to sail with two experienced captains, Bernie and Ruthie, on Paradise.
