Choosing the Best Materials for Clothing
The wind on deck can be relentless, and with a tropical climate, you will want to be comfortable at all times of the day when you are on your vacation. In the BVI, humidity rarely drops below 70%, so you will want to avoid fabrics like heavy silks that will become a damp tangle during the day. For formal wear, you should consider a light linen suit for men and linen co-ord sets or wide-leg trousers for women. Seersucker & Voile: These fabrics are puckered or thin by design, meaning they don’t sit flat against your skin, allowing for maximum airflow. Sand flies do come out at dusk, so while showing skin can be tempting, you will want to consider maxi dresses and long trousers in the evenings if you are dining or chilling out near sand. A crisp, oversized white cotton shirt looks fantastic and will keep flies at bay.
Dealing With Wind Chill When Onboard
Even when it stays at around 77°F, the wind on a moving yacht will still feel cold, especially in the evening. A lightweight pashmina or cashmere shawl is the ultimate yacht-proofing tool. Avoid anything with heavy lining or shoulder pads. A “deconstructed” blazer in cotton or linen looks stylish and doesn’t make you too hot during the day, whilst remaining comfortable in the evening.
Footwear When On Your Vacation
You will need practical footwear for exploring the islands, and you should make sure you have appropriate footwear if you plan to walk longer distances and consider diving. You will want a combination of shoes. Once you choose your itinerary, you will know whether you will be navigating difficult, slippery areas or going for a more relaxed vibe; you can choose more casual shoes.
Jewellery on the Island
You should avoid wearing silver, as salt is highly corrosive to silver. Gold, on the other hand, is very unreactive, so you should completely avoid taking silver items when on your trip. Watches are highly useful, with stainless steel and gold being good choices for the climate. The BVI is a very safe destination, but you should still be careful with your valuables.
Packing Advice
Make sure you account for humidity; you will probably want to take 20% more underwear than you think you need. For 1 to 2 weeks, consider 3 to 6 sets of swimwear, cover-ups, and evening outfits. Take a dry bag or two to protect items that could be water-damaged, and pack light with a soft-sided bag rather than bringing large, hard-sided trunk suitcases. You can then unpack your items and tuck them away, rather than carrying a bulky bag throughout your vacation. If you absolutely need something on wheels, consider a rolling duffel with a soft top. A good rule to follow is if you can’t carry your duffel with one hand, it’s probably got too much to be on the yacht. You won’t need many items on the islands, so ensure you select what you need and pack lighter than on a traditional vacation.
