Crew Information

Image of crew for Gambit 51Ft Catamaran

Gambit has a crew of 2. Captain: Doug Fairfield & Chef/Mate: Valerie Fairfield both hail from South Africa

Capt. Doug and Chef Valerie offer the perfect blend of warmth, hospitality and adventure. A husband and wife team from South Africa, with many years combined cruising, travel and charter experience. To date, Doug and Val have successfully completed over 200 charters in the Caribbean making them one of the most experienced charter crew in the region.

Doug holds a Yachtmaster Offshore Qualification, reinforced with many ocean crossings and coastal voyages. Doug started sailing in his mid twenties, based off the east coast of South Africa, where sailing and weather conditions are notoriously unpredictable and the coastline hazardous. Having grown up on the ocean with surfing, free diving, spear fishing, scuba diving, sailing and yacht racing as his main activities; sailing charters was a natural progression for him. Weekends were occupied with local and coastal racing as well as family sailing with the children. In 1995, in pursuit of our joint ambition to travel to remote places, we left on an extended 6 year cruise aboard our 30 foot yacht together with our two children, then 4 and 6 years old. This adventure took us across the Indian Ocean and back to South Africa, and then across the Atlantic to the Caribbean. During our cruising years we explored remote archipelagos, traveled by yacht many miles up the Amazon River, visited new and unique places, experienced diverse cultures and were exposed to many and varied challenges and opportunities. In 2012, the urge to travel again resulted in the acquisition of Katlyn, our first catamaran, and once again we set off across the Atlantic from Cape Town, spending a year en route, before establishing ourselves in the charter industry in the Caribbean. Along the way we have redeveloped our awareness, appreciation and respect for the ocean, the sky and the weather in all its diversity. In 2018, we upgraded and purchased Gambit, our current charter catamaran, and brought her 4500nm from Italy to the Caribbean.

Doug has been an avid adventure, sport enthusiast throughout his life. After several years of service in a special forces airborne unit, he became involved in Skydiving. He is an advanced skydiver with 2500 jumps, competed on a national level and was the chief instructor at his skydive club prior to his involvement with sailing; he is an experienced paraglider, loves scuba and free diving, as well as water and snow skiing and has completed a number of arduous long distance marathons. He is a natural storyteller and entertainer with a great sense of humor, a charismatic and attentive host, willing to go the extra mile to ensure you get the most out of your vacation whilst ensuring your privacy when appropriate.

Val grew up on a vast dairy farm in the Drakensberg farming district of South Africa, and attended boarding school, before qualifying as a private secretary and then a primary school teacher. She traded horse riding and hiking for sailing, and was perfectly positioned to home school the children while cruising. She is a qualified scuba diver, and enjoys snorkeling, skiing and hiking, and living the island life. She takes pride and pleasure in creating inviting spaces through tasteful choice and use of fabrics and decor, and is an accomplished seamstress. This is evident in the decor aboard Gambit. Many years of monohull sailing and galley responsibilities have enabled her to become a competent and creative chef aboard, fine tuned by various short courses in the culinary arts and bolstered with hundreds of satisfied charter guests.

Doug and Val have a passion for traveling and a special affinity for the African bush, it’s wildlife, beauty, solitude and wide open spaces, and have been fortunate to do an extended three month 4x4 camping safari with roof top tent through some of the most unspoiled and rugged areas of Southern Africa. The freedom of traveling without boundaries inspired a six week camper van tour of New Zealand, wild camping without the constraints of official campsites in the winter wonderland of mountains and fjords. During this time we took the opportunity to try our hand at dog sledding, abseiling and caving. We have spent a month touring Sri Lanka traveling by train and staying in local B&B’s, visited Egypt and driven off the beaten track through the Western Desert, camping in the splendor of the White Desert en route. We have driven across the USA and would love to follow this up with a longer RV trip in the not to distant future.
After 17 years of sailing together, we team up on deck to offer you a fun filled sailing vacation, and when the anchor is down, a companionable, relaxed yet attentive atmosphere is created for you to escape your normal routine and create memories which will live with you forever.

We would love the opportunity to extend a warm welcome to you in the BVI, offer you our hospitality aboard Gambit, and show you around some of our lovely anchorages and must see spots that we’ve come to call home.

Sample Menu

Meal times are always a significant aspect of any vacation!

On Gambit we aim to provide our guests with attractive meals which are both appetizing and nutritious, whilst accommodating your dietary requirements, likes and dislikes as best we can. We focus on preparing meals using a combination of locally obtained produce such as fresh fish, chicken, meat, tropical fruit and vegetables, rather than importing exotic ingredients and out of season foodstuffs. We serve breakfast, a light lunch and dinner in the cockpit or at the saloon table, with chilled water, fruit juice, tea or coffee to accompany it.

In addition we have our ‘Captains Bar’, providing you with that perfect glass of chilled wine, a cold beer or soda, a selection of standard spirits and mixers, or a sundowner cocktail.

Wow, what a fantastic week! The balance of activity and relaxation was great. Val’s meals were amazing, evidenced by clean plates at every meal. A. lot to say for a family of six with a variety of diets. Doug was a fun and active guide who taught us all diving skills and led us on many adventures over the week. His encouragement and skill-building had us achieving awesome depths with confidence. Very cool. Highlights included Mountain Point, The Indians, Anegada Conch Tour, many white sand beaches and more. We had a delightful time relaxing and simply doing nothing! Food was delicious and I tried new foods and can’t wait to get back and try the new techniques and food. Doug, your stories were wonderful and thank you for encouraging me to jump in and snorkel with the ‘big’ fish. I would have regretted not going. We hope to catch you in the Grenadines….

Hidden Coves
Val and Doug, you two are treasures! This is our third or fourth trip to the BVI and you made it the best – in spite of some weather curve balls. You took us to the properly hidden coves where Mother Nature provided the stages for incredible saline performances. But most of all you treated my precious family like family!

Treasured memories
“To see the world in a grain of sand
and a heaven in a wild flower,
hold infinity in the palm of your hand
and eternity in a hour…”
William Blake
This week may be but a grain of sand, but it will stay in our hearts forever. Treasured memories, treasured friends. Thank you for everything.

A true revelation
I guess we could spend a lot of time trying to imagine how you could have made our trip more perfect, but it would have been a waste of mental energy!! We have bare-boated in the BVI for 40 years, mostly on our own catamaran, and you managed to show us beautiful anchorages we had never considered. A True Revelation!! The food and hospitality were amazing. You managed to handle Anne-Marie’s food allergies while making gourmet meals for all of us. It was a trip that will span a lifetime of memories.
Richard & Anne-Marie
Dices away
We can’t thank you enough for all the hospitality and good food as well as the good times we had this week on Gambit. It was a week that we will always look back on fondly. We will think of you when we play dice and have a big email on our faces. We hope to sail the BVI with you again.
The Ckarks
How did a week go by so quickly?
Though we all came to this trip with different expectations, hopes and anxieties, our family is leaving this boat with a shared feeling of deep gratitude. We are baffled as to how a week went by so quickly. You make a bunch of land-locked Americans wish we were pirates!! Thank you both so mush for a truly fantastic week. We loved the islands, the snorkeling, the boat and the amazing food – but all agree that the best part was getting to know and love the two of you. You made us feel like well loved family members. We hope this is not good bye, but rather ‘see you soon’. Thanks again

Journeys and Discoveries
WOW! What a wonderful and memorable experience aboard Gambit with you both. Having regularly cruised the BVI since our honeymoon 35 years ago,, we were introduced to so many new experiences both on the water and from Val’s amazing 5 Star galley. The diversity, creativity, presentation and freshness were present in every meal. The wonderful aromas and flavors that flowed from the galley to our plates we will remember forever. Your stories of your family’s journeys and discoveries around the globe read like one adventure novel and we were honored to hear them directly from the authors. Just when we thought we knew every anchorage in the BVI, Doug would surprise us with a new one that would be better than the last. We will remember this vacation forever! Thank you!
Kim and Dave
An author aboard!

18th Wedding Anniversary
One year ago we percolated this plan to spend a week with good friends and four teenagers in the BVI with Val and Doug. Anticipations ran high, as did worry over all the restrictions and travel issues – would covid keep us away? Lucky for us we descended on Gambit and spent an amazing week swimming with fishes, turtles, spotted rays and dolphins. We ate amazing food, saw incredible scenery, drank (too much (:), and reunited with great friends and enjoyed quality time with our kids. And what do we say about Val and Doug? You guys were incredible hosts, and inspirational, and love… I could go on for days. We are eternally thankful for the gift we have given us this week – rest, rejuvenation, and a sense of being cared for. We wish you the best for your upcoming chapters.

A floating toy box
We are most grateful for what has been a fabulous adventure! We truly enjoyed your extensive knowledge of the Bvi, it’s islands, it’s people, it’s creatures below and even the stars above. You have mastered the life aquatic and we thoroughly enjoyed the ride! The meals so thoughtfully crafted by Val were fantastic and Dou’s seamanship impressive. Gambit is a floating toy box full of it’s own treasures, from paddling to snorkeling to the joy that was watching kids hang onto a speeding tube. We thank you sincerely for sharing your world with us, even only one week has reset us on a peaceful path and from here we’ll just keep looking for the Southern Cross
With gratitude,
Matt, Jill, Finn and Rory

Trip #3
Trip #3 has been another amazing adventure! Who knew these trips could get any better? You both are amazing at what you do and your love of the islands and the ocean shines through in what you do! Thanks again for another wonderful trip around the islands.

On the 13th June, 2022…..
On the 13th June, 2022, Captain Doug and I, Jacob, handily vanquished my plain, rowdy, vehement wife Trish and her lowly unadvantageous partner Frank at Cornhole, 10-6 final score. According to Trish, Captain and I will one day stride victorious and gratified through the gates of Valhalla to re-unite with Doug’s own previous self, Viking Doug. Our lives were of value to Odin. Gratefully, Jacob and Trish
Wonderful trip
Thank you for a wonderful trip aboard your home. The food, hospitality, and sights were absolutely perfect. the snorkeling and dives we’ve right on, along with the Rummikub. Sail on my friends, and hope to see you again.
