Crew Information

Rumaway has a crew of 2, Captain: Travis Townsley & Chef: Tara Townsley both from USA
Travis Townsley
Captain Travis has been known to say he likes Fast Cars and Slow Boats… Born in Georgia, but raised in Texas, Travis spent the early part of his career working on race car teams (and racing whenever he got a chance). He has worked on everything from Vintage Can Am cars, Formula Fords, Toyota Atlantic, F2000, World Challenge, and Nascar Super Trucks. Life in the fast lane certainly was a good time, but there was something about the calmness, and challenges, of sailing that caught his attention. He eventually hung up the tools and helmet, and bought himself a Hobie Cat and learned to sail. He also started and grew a family business with his Father and 3 siblings, manufacturing product that was supplied to the Land Yacht industry (motorhomes). Raising two kids kept him on land but once they became adults themselves, he knew that a life on the ocean was where he wanted to be. While the kids were home, he started them off on a Sunfish and then went through owning progressively larger monohulls. Once the kids graduated and moved on to college, he and his wife bought a 47’ monohull which they lived aboard for over a year before deciding to change their path in life and purchase RumAway, a 53’ luxury catamaran so that they could share their passion with others. He still enjoys driving a Fast Car now and then, but Slow Boats (sailboats), and life in the warm, blue waters of the Caribbean, are what brings him joy. He looks forward to sharing that joy with you on RumAway.
Tara has always had a love of the water. You could say it’s in her blood; she was born on a boat (technically she was born at the hospital, but came “home” to a boat). After spending her first few years on a boat in Santa Cruz Harbor, California, her parents decided keeping Tara out of the water and on the boat was more than they could handle; so they sold the boat and bought a Land Yacht (motorhome). The next few years were spent living on the road, seeing the sights. (If you can’t tell, her parents were borderline gypsies, so it’s no surprise that Tara would one day be drawn back to life on the sea). Tara moved around quite a bit before settling in Texas. Corporate America was Tara’s career path where she has worked for several major corporations that sent her travelling all over the world implementing various systems. Tara has always been passionate about cooking, and it’s no surprise that her first job was in the food industry. She got sidetracked with other positions in Corporate America before going back into the food industry for the last 10 years of her career. To say again that Tara is passionate about cooking is an understatement. Tara finds great joy in preparing tasty meals for others to enjoy. She looks forward to sharing with you her creations in the galley.
Tara and Travis were MFEO (made for each other). After raising two children of her own, it was in Texas where she met Travis. Travis had a 30’ monohulled on a local lake, and it wasn’t long before Tara was back on the water, where her life started. Travis and Tara were the perfect match; Travis had a dream (to live on a sailboat) and Tara had a plan (how to make it become reality). After surviving (actually thriving) raising 4 teenagers with their new blended family, Tara and Travis set their sights on the prize; to live on a boat. They have been “captain and crew” for many groups bareboating in the islands, and the one common thing that everyone said is “Y’all are so good at showing us a good time and taking care of every last detail, you should do this for a living”. Well 5 boats, ASA certifications, and USCG Captain’s school later, here they are ready to share their love of sailing the islands with you on RumAway.

This was the most magical vacation ever?. Travis and Tara are so so knowledgeable about all things Caribbean, making our transits beautiful wonderful experiences, and Tara made such delectable masterpieces, especially the ahi tuna nachos and rum cake! I could have eaten the entire tray myself! We loved having the sails up, their knowledge of where to snorkel, our on island day exploring Virgin Gorda, and all of their input.
Some of our favorite things were all the beautiful snorkel spots and the amazing sea life we saw, walking the sandy beaches of Anegada and lobster dinner on the beach and dancing, Saba Rock, the Baths, Jost Van Dyke, just floating in the beautiful sea, watching the stars at night, and ALL of Tara’s meals. They are master drink mixers as well!
I wish we could have stayed for 2 weeks or forever. I can’t wait to return and do a different area. I can’t recommend them highly enough! If you’re considering a catamaran trip—theirs is the ONLY one to do. Tell them Beth sent you ?.

A Seafaring Paradise with Rumaway and Captain Travis & TaraOur voyage aboard the catamaran Rumaway in the British Virgin Islands was nothing short of extraordinary! Captains Travis and Tara created an unparalleled experience that blended adventure, luxury, and culinary delights into a seamless nautical dream.
Our days were filled with thrilling snorkeling escapades, each one more enchanting than the last. From graceful turtles gliding through crystal-clear waters to the mesmerizing spectacle of spotted eagle rays, barracudas, and reef sharks, every underwater encounter left us in awe of the BVI’s marine wonders. The snorkeling sessions were like stepping into a vibrant aquarium, with Captain Travis and Tara serving as knowledgeable guides to the underwater wonders.
The evenings were a gastronomic delight, where we were treated to five-star dinners that surpassed our culinary expectations. The culinary expertise on Rumaway is truly remarkable, and every meal was a masterpiece, reflecting the freshest and finest ingredients the Caribbean has to offer. From savory seafood delicacies to decadent desserts, our taste buds embarked on a journey of their own.
Adding to the culinary indulgence were the exquisite cocktails crafted by the talented crew. Each drink was a work of art, perfectly complementing the breathtaking sunsets and starlit nights. Captain Travis’s famous Painkillers became an instant favorite, a signature blend that captured the essence of relaxation and tropical bliss.
Beyond the stunning scenery and delectable dining, what truly set this experience apart was the warmth and hospitality of Captain Travis and Tara. Their passion for sailing and sharing the beauty of the BVI was evident in every moment of our journey. They not only ensured our safety and comfort but also regaled us with stories, local insights, and infectious enthusiasm for the sea.
In the end, our time aboard Rumaway was not just a vacation; it was a voyage into a world of unparalleled beauty, adventure, and luxury. If you’re seeking an unforgettable escape where every detail is meticulously curated, Rumaway with Captain Travis and Tara is the catamaran for you. Wonderful trip!!! Despite the threat of 2 tropical storms (neither of which touched us) you were very flexible and allowed us to go to all of the amazing spots we wanted to visit. Your suggestions on places to go was spot on. Really liked the land tour of Virgin Gordan (particularly the Copper Mine and Savannah Beach). All the meals were amazing! I think I put on 5 lbs. We loved the foredeck with the dock and the 4 Bote chairs. We hope you have a wonderful and successful charter season. Be safe. Stay in touch.

Travis and Tara,
What else can we say but Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!! This week was absolutely fantastic. This truly was a trip of a lifetime as you promised. The hospitality and food was amazing. Both of you felt like you were part of the family. We also have to thank you for taking care of the “Mash Unit”. We promise to keep Julie in a rubber ball NEXT TIME (LOL). We are definitely Team Tarpon and Anne Loves BATS. Zack will return to be a deckhand whenever needed. We could go on and on.
THANKS AGAIN.

Our family vacation to the BVI was exhilarating and relaxing at the same time. While out at sea, the sail, the scenery, and yacht made the trip refreshing and chill. The land tours and snorkeling was amazing. The Baths and Copper mine tour were extremely unique and each snorkel spot held different underwater creatures and colorful coral. Our charter, Rum Away, had the perfect layout to accommodate our family of five. The Crew was amazing! We now count Captain Travis and Tara as part of our family and can not wait to explore with them again. Chef Tara’s food was amazing and Captian Travis was super engaged with a family members interest in sailing. The Crew knew exactly the best harbors to stay and places to visit. Though our vacation only lasted a week, the memories made will last a lifetime!
The yacht was extremely roomy for 5 adults. We used three bedrooms each with its own bathroom. The bedrooms had ample storage and wonderful bed linens that were decorated beautifully and extremely maintained. Seating on the front of the yacht was very comfortable for stretching out and relaxing while sailing as well as a great hangout when docked.
I am thankful our days were active as we were fed extremely well. Chef Tara’s stuffed French Toast topped with berries was such a treat to start the day. Lunches ranged from salads with homemade dressings to smash burgers, and dinners consisted of Tara’s chicken scampi and ribeyes with au gratin potatoes which we continue to talk about. But, to top it all off were DESSERTS! Her Key Lime pie is heavenly, while her rum cake was very moist and dreamy, the rum bread pudding was yummy and we could have licked the dish that held creme brûlée!
Rum Away had individual snorkel gear, individual paddle boards, a multi-person paddle board, a floating dock, and floating FatBoy bean bag chairs/loungers (which were our favorites on and off the boat).
We now count Captain Travis and Chef Tara as family! We were welcomed at the airport by Travis and had a quick walk to the dock and boat where we were greeted by Tara and refreshing scented towels. Our group consisted of two young pilots right out of college and one was extremely drawn to Captain Travis and soaked up as much knowledge as he could.
I want to go back!
